The Sebastian Clambake seeks to build community spirit by focusing attention on the Indian River Lagoon and its importance to life in the Sebastian River area, both the past and at present. The events featured in the Festival bring together the diverse interests that make the Lagoon an essential facet of the Sebastian lifestyle. Our vibrant fishing community is recognized in its recreational form, while the importance of the local commercial fishery in the development and history of the area is honored. The various events highlight the growing importance of the expanded Riverview Park as a center for community fun and entertainment. Finally, the Bonfire and the Clambake, like those remembered from the Long Island and new England childhoods of so many of our residents, seem to bring an endless offering of the delectable bounty of the sea, and forges a common bond between the old Sebastian clamming families and these newer residents.
Fresh seafood booths, live music, historic re-enactments, a boat show, the Wacky Raft Race, children’s activities, a volleyball, tournament, the Kayak Poker Run, boats rides, and more will again be the focus in Sebastian’s Riverview Park from 2 PM to 9PM on Friday November 7th – 10AM to 9PM on Saturday, November 8th – 10AM to 6PM on Sunday, November 9th. Admission is free – tickets are for sale for food and T-Shirts. Live music and various entertainment is scheduled through the weekend.
The Festival is known throughout the State for the quality of its food: Linguine with red & white clam sauce, peel and eat tiger shrimp, clam chowder, fried fish & clam strips, fabulous clams, and sausage, pepper & onion sandwiches are our featured culinary delights. And we can’t forget the cold draft beer and sodas.
But it’s not just about good times and good food …The Clambake is organized by the Sebastian Clambake Foundation, Inc., a non-profit corporation composed of area public service organizations and supported by our business community in its efforts to have a positive impact of our quality of life. Volunteers from our local community comprise the entire labor force. Each year the member organizations of the Foundation pick one or two local charitable or public-purpose projects to receive the proceeds of the Clambake. The first two Clambakes designated the Boys and Girls Club’s Sebastian Building Fund as the beneficiary, and donated over $83,000 towards the new facility on Main Street. Seniors were the focus for the fundraising in 2005, with proceeds benefiting projects for the Senior Resource Association and By the River Affordable Senior Housing Facility. In 2006, the Sebastian Soccer Association received funds for new soccer fields and the City of Sebastian received funds for improved lighting in Riverview Park.
